Do you know how much paint you will need? Let's calculate it together!

When you decide that you want to renovate a room or even the entire house by yourself, most often problems in estimating the amount of washable paint needed arise. It’s somehow normal for this to happen, unless you are a professional painter who works daily with the specialized notions (and the present article isn’t addressed to professionals...), but we hope that we will help you overcome quickly this obstacle by using the calculation file that you can download for free from the Product Category FREE DOWNLOAD or simply by clicking on the FREE DOWNLOAD button which can be found at the end of this article.

The use of this file doesn’t require specialized knowledge of architecture or interior design; you just have to fill in the yellow fields with height and length of the walls, respectively for doors and windows positioned on these walls.

In the second sheet you will fill the dimensions of the ceiling – the calculation is performed separately because generally the ceiling will have a different color than the walls (we recommend a lighter color), thus a different colored washable paint is used.

Very important: All the dimensions must be completed using the meter as a measuring unit.

After you have completed for each wall separately, in the red cell you will find the total area that you need to cover with washable paint in this room.

What is the theoretical quantity of washable paint needed? It’s easy: in the second table you just need to change the green cell depending on the number of layers recommended for proper coverage of the entire surface, and next to the product intended for use you’ll find the theoretical quantity required for this area.

As we mentioned before, the result represents the theoretical quantity, to which we need to add at least 10%, but not less than 1 or 2 liters of paint, because:

•   Accidental losses.

•   An additional need for possible large sills in case of classical buildings with very broad exterior walls (the file doesn’t take into account these particular cases).

•   Quantities of paint soaked in roller or lost/dried in trays of paint.

•   Subsequent repairs necessary after accidental hitting of the walls caused by the installation or moving furniture (it happens more often than we would like...).

•   Subsequent repairs required after installing skirting boards, lighting devices and electrical outlets or faulty detachment of adhesive tape with which you protect windows and doors frames.

This spare quantity is recommended to be taken into account and purchased especially if you use colored washable paint, even for computer coloring. It’s true that later you can buy the exact same color code, but it’s hard to believe that for retouching you will be able to add the necessary quantity of water in order to obtain the exact same dilution percentage like you obtained for the initial painting. Perhaps that it could be obtained in a pharmaceutical laboratory, using a breaker and a pipette, but...

Tips&Tricks: When the walls are covered with colored paint, especially in strong tones, it is important to provide a uniform color of the wall.Experts appeal to a simple but effective trick, which you will not find in the datasheets of primers and washable paints: they apply a small addition of the colored paint, which is going to be used, to the primer.Even if walls covered only with this colored primer will look weird and uneven the final result is important: a strong and uniform color all over the wall.

Note: In the event that you cannot use the downloaded file from different reasons (probably because there were no formulas saved due to incompatibility with the version of Excel you are using), please notify us by filling this contact form Contact Us! and we will send you another version that will be useful for you.
