From assembling a piece of furniture, to decoration in the smallest detail and to the "invention of an integrated system" by which storage areas to be more spacious, with the proper tools and materials, each of us can become its own craftsman or artist.

One of the best ways to initiate in this process is the recycling of used objects.

Did you know: “50.000.000 houses could be heated for 20 years with the quantities of wood and paper people throw each year?”source: http://ecoavizierul.weebly.com/statistici-si-rapoarte.html

But recycling can be more than use of waste for resources, it may also create custom decorations or useful objects.

Below you can find a few ideas for recycling glass objects by decoupage technique:

The first step consists in removing trade labels, degreasing the jar by washing with kitchen detergent and drying.

Second step: The exterior surface is covered with a thin layer of primer and let dry.

Third step: a layer of acrylic paint is applied and that dry again.

In choosing the color you have the freedom to use an extensive array of colors, depending on your preference.

Forth step: Choosing the decorative napkin or rice paper

These products are found in stores already printed in an extremely diverse range. Most times, the first criterion by which to choose material used is your preference for the theme or printed image. Subsequently there are other issues:

  • The decorative napkin if easier to mold in the decorated object, but it is very sensible (most napkins are made of 3 layers, 2 of them need to be removed and only the third one with printed image will be used)
  • Rice paper requires a little more skill in applying on the desired object, but is more resistant to tampering.

After selecting the model, the entire image or only cut portions will be applied on the object by gluing with water based adhesive (using specialized adhesives for decoupage technique) and will be left to dry.

Fifth step: Apply 2 layers of varnish (water or solvent-alcohol based). Depending on what you prefer you can use a glossy varnish, matt or pearl, with different textures and effects.

Sixth step: To secure loose items to dry 24 hours

In the end you are the happy designer of a decorative or useful object that you can customize to fit so perfectly in the home decor or to match the preferences of a friend whom you can give a gift that you put soul in.
